Complete Piano Works

by Randi Botnen (1976-2025)

Randi's works have been performed internationally, and in 2024, she was honored as Composer Laureate in the International Composers for Beauty Competition—a testament to her exceptional artistry.

A lifelong dream of Randi’s was to bring all her piano works together in a single volume, with Auguste Renoir’s Two Young Girls as the cover. This collection, Complete Piano Works, features all 17 of her piano compositions, ranging from intermediate to advanced levels, offering pianists the opportunity to explore her distinct musical voice. She approved the final version of her book before passing peacefully in her sleep, free from pain after a long battle with cancer. In a final act of generosity, she made the sheet music freely available to the public, ensuring her music would be shared for generations to come. Hopefully, through learning some of Randi’s pieces, you can get to know her through the notes she left behind.

Beyond her compositions, Randi was a beloved member of the classical music community, admired not only for her talent but also for her dedication to supporting fellow composers. Understanding the challenges faced by those devoted to melodic classical music, she founded the Together for Melody Foundation, a nonprofit committed to fostering creativity and providing scholarships and grants to composers worldwide..

Though Randi is no longer with us, her music and vision continue to inspire. Her compositions will live on—played, studied, and appreciated by musicians for years to come. And through the foundation she created, her passion for supporting fellow artists will keep shaping the future of classical music. Her impact will not be forgotten.

You can download Complete Piano Works for free. If you wish to contribute to the foundation, your generosity is deeply appreciated but never required.

Shouts From an Old Rosewood PianoShouts From an Old Rosewood Piano

Marlene Moore is a renowned Canadian-American composer, pianist, and educator living in Southern California. Marlene’s original music has been performed internationally, with performances featured on radio stations, concert stages, and even a dedicated concert tour celebrating the International Year of Canadian Composers. She has also been a long-term client and dear friend. Since 1970, she has composed over 300 pieces for piano and other instruments, including Symphony of Life.

Marlene’s musical journey began at the age of three when she first played melodies by ear. With perfect pitch and a natural gift for composition, she went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, preparing for a career as a concert pianist. Though initially encouraged to pursue a more "practical" path, her passion for music never wavered. She performed major works by Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky before transitioning into teaching and composition.

The Story Behind Shouts from an Old, Rosewood Piano

Marlene Moore’s inspiration came from a grand rosewood piano once aboard a Great Lakes ship. When the crew modernized, it was discarded, left outside for disposal—until a neighbor rescued it. The piano eventually found a home in Marlene’s living room, where it remained for seven years. When upkeep became too costly, she sold it, but as movers carried it away, the piano emitted eerie, mournful groans—almost as if protesting its fate.

Those haunting sounds inspired Shouts from an Old, Rosewood Piano, a piece recorded but left untouched for fifty-one years. When Marlene later sought to have it transcribed, great care was taken to reconstruct faded and missing notes, ensuring the composition could finally be heard in full. Two months later, it was premiered in Malta by the brilliant concert pianist Milica Lawrence.

Her Back to Basics Piano Method curriculum took over 20 years to develop, followed by an additional decade spent creating companion books on composition, sight-reading, practice techniques, rhythm, and theory. With 23 books in total, her series is beloved by teachers and students alike for its structured, engaging, and effective approach. Over the years, she has trained dozens of piano teachers, many of whom continue to pass down her method to the next generation.

Marlene’s career has also included recording advanced piano works in Vancouver studios, performing on cruise ships, and composing original music that seemingly "arrived" in her mind, fully formed. She has spoken extensively on overcoming stage fright, documented in her book Performing Without Fear. Passionate about celebrating living composers, she wrote and published Living Women Composers, a book featuring 10 living women composers. She is deeply committed to learning about and showcasing living classical composers, particularly women, to ensure their contributions are recognized and appreciated.

Her works have been performed worldwide, and in 2024, she was recognized for her outstanding contributions to contemporary composition, receiving the title of Composer Laureate in the International Composers for Beauty Competition—a reflection of her remarkable artistry and dedication to the craft.

Even after 50 years of teaching and composing, Marlene’s passion remains strong. Today, she enjoys a semi-retired life, dedicating her time to writing music, painting landscapes, and promoting her Back to Basics series.

Cello Sonata, 4 movements
by Christopher Thomas (composed 1980s)

I met composer Christopher Thomas entirely by chance online. He shared a recording of a cello sonata he had composed during his college days, a piece he had written and recorded by ear with a friend but never transcribed into sheet music. The recording had been tucked away for decades, and Christopher was looking for someone who could help bring it to life. The audio came with its challenges, notably a high-pitched beeping sound that persisted throughout. Fortunately, I was able to produce a final score that he was extremely happy with. As a result, he recommended my services to dozens of his composer and musician friends.

Dance of The Guardian Angels
by Marlene Moore
Original recording

"Dance of the Guardian Angels" is a majestic, eloquent advanced piano solo piece, one of the rarer transcriptions I’ve done that reaches A0. Beginning with an elegant allegretto grazioso, the piece unfolds gently, with a grace that captures the tender essence of its title. It then builds into the expressive, grand section largo grandioso e potente, where the music swells in power and depth, embodying a sense of grandeur and emotional intensity.

The story behind this piece is truly special—within just two weeks, both Marlene and her dear friend Randi Botnen asked me to transcribe compositions they had dedicated to each other. "Dance of the Guardian Angels" is Marlene’s tribute to Randi, reflecting their deep bond. Full of sweeping melodies and delicate harmonies, it conveys both strength and vulnerability. A timeless work, it’s striking in its grace and emotional depth, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who listens or plays it.

Piano Meditation is a delicately evocative piece that feels like a deep breath in musical form. The soft, warm tones of the felt piano, paired with the gentle mechanical sounds of the keys and pedal, create an intimate, almost tactile listening experience. Its slow, free-flowing nature allows each note to linger, inviting reflection and calm. There’s a quiet vulnerability in the way the harmonies unfold, never rushed, just existing in a peaceful, meditative space. It’s the kind of piece that doesn’t demand attention but effortlessly draws you in—perfect for moments of stillness.
